Killer Bloat In Great Danes

Bloat is the number one killer of large and deep-chested dogs such as Great Danes, German Shepherds and Dobermans. It is an emergency situation that could kill your pet in less than an hour. Bloat, formally called "Gastric Dilatation- Volvulus" (GDV) is a condition in which the stomach becomes overstretched. Bloat of the stomach is often related to excessive gas content but food and fluid can also be present. Stress and anxiety may also cause bloat to occur. Bloat is also referred to as torsion or gastric torsion and gastric dilation-volvulus when the stomach is also twisted.

There are many symptoms related to bloat. You dog may attempt to vomit every five to 30 minutes, but is usually unsuccessful (nothing comes up or just foam and/or mucous comes up). This symptom seems to be the most common symptom. He may seem to be restless all the time, frequently changing positions and he doesn't act like his usual self. Upon notice of these early signs, try to put your ears to your dog's tummy. If there is lack of normal gurgling and digestive sounds in the stomach, and the abdomen may feel tight, then you have all the reasons to call your vet, your dog is in danger of bloat. Other symptoms such as coughing, drooling, whining, shallow breathing and rapid panting may also be present.

Bloat cannot be treated at home. It is an emergency medical condition that requires the expertise of a veterinarian. Remember that bloat is a fatal condition that could kill your dog in a matter of minutes.

To reduce the chance of bloat to occur, make sure that your dog doesn't gulp a lot of food, water or air. Prohibit rapid eating and divide the food into two or three times daily, instead of just one. How To Detect Ear Infection In Your Dogs And Treat It?

If you notice your dog has been shaking his head a bit too often and scratching its ears with its paws or even trying to rub its ears on the ground, your dog may have some form of ear infections. This is likely to happen for dogs with long drooping ears as the inside of the ears is not well ventilated or aired. Another possibility is that water could have gone inside the ears when you were bathing your dog and the dampness provided an ideal environment for ear infection to happen.

Firstly, try to have a look at the ears of the dog and use a cotton bud to clean the ears but do not push the cotton bud too far in the ear. You may see some ear wax and they may be dark brown or black in color. In worse case, this wax may have already appeared on the outside of the ears and you can see it immediately.

However, you should not attempt to use water to clean it unless it is on the exterior or easily accessible part of the ear. You should also not pour or drip water into the ear as it may make it worse. Just use wet cotton wool to wipe it.

After having confirmed that there is an unusual presence of ear wax or if the dog continues to show irritation by shaking its head or scratching its ears, despite your having done some minimal exterior cleansing of the ear, please take your dog to the vet for consultation.

My beagle has quite a bad ear infection and the ear wax can be easily seen on the exterior of its ear. I suppose it was due to the shaking of its head and flapping of its long and drooping ears. I took it to the vet and he cleaned its ears by using a pair of long forceps wrapped round with cotton wool after applying some ear cleansing solution. The vet also took a sample of the ear wax for analysis and gave my beagle an injection. I was also taught to clean the ears of the beagle daily for a week and subsequently, on a weekly basis.

To prevent future occurrence of the ear infection, I was also advised to be careful not to let any water dripping into the ears when I bathe him. I also took the effort to clean and dry his ears after his bathe since then. Importantly, you must be observant and watch out for any unusual behavior displayed by your dog. Catch the problem as early as possible and get it treated immediately.

Older dogs should be fed not less than twice daily. Free feeding may be used but may result to problems like soiling problems. Exercise and other vigorous activity should be avoided one hour before and one to two hours after meals. This will prevent the stomach from twisting. Drinking of water before and after meals should also be avoided.

Picture of giant dogs will surely appear in one's mind when talking about Great Danes. But they are not only known as large dogs. Another distinctive characteristic of Great Danes is their cropped ears. Ear cropping began centuries ago as a preventive measure. Yes, you read it right. Ears were a problem in hunting that is why they are cropped to prevent wolves and wild boar from grabbing hold of the ears.

Cropping refers to the removal or amputation of the ears. So why deem it as a preventive measure when the process itself induces pain to the animal? Since hundreds of years ago, different dog breeds were used as hunting dogs. Ears were a problem in hunting and one way to address the problem is to have the ears cropped. Cropping of the ears was done to prevent wolves and wild boar (often the objective of Great Dane hunt) from grabbing hold of the ears.

But despite of its original purpose, many people have come to question the need of cropping the ears of dogs. To them, ear cropping is a painful and mutilating process for any animal. Its no use allowing a dog to experience such pain because they believe that the process has no medical, physical, environmental or cosmetic advantage. The surgical procedure, the subsequent taping and bandaging that is sometimes necessary after the surgery are just methods of animal cruelty. Others believe and argue that there are other benefits a dog can derive from cropping of the ears. According to them, cropped ears will prevent ear canal infections and is just like spaying and neutering.

The process is still common and exercised in the United States. However, it is banned in some European countries like United Kingdom, Denmark, Germany and in parts of Australia and New Zealand. Today, there are no longer scientifically proven reasons to crop ears. Ear infections may occur in all sorts of breeds whether they have cropped ears or not. Great Danes are no longer used to hunt wild boar. The decision largely depends on the owner. It's their choice whether they want their dog's ears cropped or left natural. If they really like the looks of cropped ears, better do the process as early as six weeks of age in the larger breeds and not more than nine weeks in the smaller ones.

Great Danes will still be Great Danes regardless of their ears. So long as the process is alright with you, go for it.

The Trip Home With Your Puppy

The puppy settles down in the crate, happily chewing on the toy his new owner brought for him. For the first few miles the pup occasionally gets restless, stops chewing his new toy, and whines. After he gets used to the movement and sound of the car, he settles back down and naps for about half an hour. When he wakes he starts to whine again, and the new owner realizes the pup probably needs a potty break. She pulls into a rest stop and dips a lightweight leash to the pup's collar because it would be too dangerous to walk him off-leash here, so close to traffic.

The owner carries her pup to a likely spot and sets him on the ground. The puppy sits for a moment and scratches at the unfamiliar new collar, then gets up, sniffs the ground, turns half a circle, and urinates. Success! The owner waits a few minutes more, just in case the pup isn't finished. Sure enough, he goes again. Then they hit the road. The car's movement lulls the pup and he soon falls asleep in his crate again and doesn't wake up until they pull into the driveway at home.

While you're at the breeder's home (or the shelter, if that's where you will get your new dog), take a paper towel and blot up some urine from your pup or his littermates. Put this into a plastic bag and take it home. Place the soiled paper towel on the ground in the area where you'll be taking your pup to eliminate. Pour about half a cup of lukewarm water through the towel onto the ground to scent the new potty area with puppy urine, then dispose of the paper towel. The scent will give your pup the clue he needs to understand where he's supposed to eliminate at his new home.
